Mobilizing College Athletics to Drive Civic Engagement
Using the influence of college coaches and student-athletes to promote social justice and voter participation.
College athletics hold enormous influence across campuses and communities. Recognizing that platform, Coaches 4 Change was created by NCAA Division I basketball coaches committed to using their voices to address social injustice and encourage civic engagement.
Built around a mission to engage, educate, empower, and evolve, the initiative brings together coaches, athletes, and community leaders to promote conversations around systemic inequality while encouraging voter registration and participation as a pathway for meaningful change.

The Challenge: Turning Awareness Into Action
In 2020, amid growing national conversations around racial injustice and civic participation, college coaches began looking for ways to use their collective platform to address social issues and mobilize their communities.
While many coaches and athletes were already speaking out, there wasn’t a coordinated framework to help translate that awareness into sustained civic engagement, particularly when it came to voter education and participation.
Coaches 4 Change was created to bring coaches together under a unified initiative focused on social justice, education, and civic participation. The goal was to use the visibility of college athletics to spark meaningful conversations on campuses while encouraging student-athletes and communities to become more engaged citizens.
To maximize its impact, the initiative needed strategic partnerships and resources that could connect coaches, athletes, and campus communities with credible voter engagement tools.
The Solution: Building Strategic Partnerships for Civic Engagement
GRC Advising worked with Coaches 4 Change during the early development of the initiative to help support its strategy around civic engagement and social awareness.
A key component of this effort was facilitating connections between Coaches 4 Change leadership and Vote.org, one of the country’s leading nonpartisan voter engagement platforms. Through this introduction, the initiative gained access to tools and resources that made it easier for coaches, student-athletes, and campus communities to register to vote and participate in elections.
GRC also supported conversations around how coaches across conferences could work together to present a unified voice on civic engagement while using their platforms to elevate awareness around voting and social justice.
In addition, the initiative explored opportunities to bring together coaches, partners, and speakers around key moments in the college basketball calendar, including gatherings during the NCAA Final Four, creating a space for dialogue around leadership, civic responsibility, and social change.
