From Sick Care to Lifestyle Medicine
Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) is the leading health system in Eastern Kentucky and parts of West Virginia, originally founded in 1956 as the Miners Memorial Hospital Association to serve coal miners and their families, and today operating 14–16 hospitals, employing about 6,700 staff, and serving as the largest healthcare provider and single largest employer in its region. ARH has evolved into a pillar of community life, expanding beyond acute care into mental health support and disaster relief, including dedicated flood recovery efforts and disaster relief centers.

Challenge: Chronic Disease and Traditional "Sick Care" in Rural Appalachia
Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH)—the largest employer and healthcare provider in Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia—faced a region burdened by high rates of chronic disease Historically, the system operated on a "treatment-centric" model designed to manage illness rather than prevent it. To improve long-term community resilience, ARH needed to evolve its strategic plan to place a greater emphasis on Lifestyle Medicine—diet, nutrition, and behavior-based interventions.
Solution: Designing a System-Wide Preventative Strategy
GRC Advising worked closely with the Management team, acted as a strategic architect, benchmarking ARH against leading U.S. institutions to identifying gaps and building the architecture needed to make prevention a sustainable service line.
Impact: Health, Economy, and Community Resilience
Expanded Access: Supported the launch of the a Mobile Clinic which now serves at least 10 counties, providing early detection screenings for hundreds in their communities including high-risk farmers and coal miners.
Economic Integration: Programs now link hospital systems with local farmers, addressing food insecurity while simultaneously strengthening regional agricultural economies.
Disaster Readiness: supported a host of initiatives aimed at flood response and disaster recovery.
National Profile: Elevated ARH’s standing as a national leader in rural health, demonstrating that world-class preventative innovation can originate in Appalachian communities.
